James Arthur Bennett, 71, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on February 14, 2024. Jim was a renowned landscape architect whose designs transformed public spaces throughout the Pacific Northwest. Born in Seattle, Washington, he discovered his love for nature during childhood camping trips in the Cascade Mountains, which later inspired his life's work. After earning his degree from the University of Washington, Jim established Bennett Landscape Architecture in 1980. His most notable projects include the Waterfront Botanical Gardens in Portland and the restoration of Pioneer Courthouse Square. Jim believed that accessible green spaces were essential to community wellbeing, and he devoted his career to creating beautiful, sustainable environments for all to enjoy. Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was an avid fly fisherman, a talented woodworker, and a dedicated mentor to young architects. He leaves behind his partner of 25 years, Robert Chen, his brother Thomas, and countless friends and colleagues who admired his vision, integrity, and gentle spirit. Jim's landscapes will continue to grow and flourish as living memorials to his creative genius.
