eulogy

William John Harrison, 64, passed away suddenly on February 14, 2023, in Chicago. Bill was a respected labor union leader who fought for workers' rights for over 40 years. Born into a blue-collar family in Detroit, he witnessed his father's factory layoff in the 1970s an experience that ignited his lifelong commitment to economic justice. As president of the Midwest Industrial Workers Union from 2005-2020, Bill negotiated landmark contracts that improved wages, safety standards, and job security for thousands. He was known for his tough negotiating stance but also for his deep care for individual members personally returning every phone call and visiting injured workers in hospital. After retirement, he taught labor studies at community colleges. Bill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary, their three children, and seven grandchildren all of whom heard his favorite saying: 'A fair day's work deserves a fair day's pay, and dignity besides.' His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Workers' Education Fund he established, ensuring his fight for fairness continues.
