Luca Giovanni Moretti, 63, passed away on May 2, 2023, in Rome. Luca was a master violin maker whose instruments were played by virtuosos in orchestras worldwide. Born into a family of luthiers in Cremona the birthplace of Stradivari he moved to Rome as a young man to establish his own workshop, blending centuries-old techniques with his own innovations. Each of Luca's violins took over 200 hours to create, using wood aged for decades and varnish formulas passed down through generations. His instruments were known for their rich, warm tones and exquisite craftsmanship. Though he received offers from collectors offering fortunes for his work, he preferred to sell to working musicians, saying: 'Instruments should make music, not sit in glass cases.' Luca is survived by his wife Isabella, their son Marco (who now runs the workshop), and three grandchildren. He taught his craft to dozens of apprentices from around the world, ensuring the tradition would continue. His final violin unfinished at his death was completed by his students and donated to a music school for underprivileged children in Rome, ensuring his art would create new music for generations to come.
