Eleanor Grace Thompson, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 5, 2022, in York. Nellie, as she was known to friends, was a beloved midwife who delivered over 2,000 babies during her 40-year career at York Hospital. Born in a small village in Yorkshire, she knew from childhood that she wanted to help bring new life into the world a calling she pursued with unwavering dedication. After training at the Royal Infirmary in the 1950s, Nellie became known for her calm presence and skilled hands during deliveries. Generations of York families requested 'Mrs. Thompson' for their births, knowing she would provide both expert medical care and comforting reassurance. Even after retirement, former patients would stop her in the street to introduce her to the children she had delivered. She is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Nellie often said, 'Every birth is a miracle, and I've been blessed to witness thousands.' Her family takes comfort knowing she has been reunited with her husband George, who predeceased her by 15 years, and that her legacy continues in the lives she helped begin.
