Sarah Louise Campbell

Sarah Louise Campbell, 33, passed away on July 22, 2024, in a climbing accident in the Swiss Alps. Sarah was a brilliant software engineer who led development of accessibility features at a major tech company, making digital technology usable for people with disabilities. Born in Edinburgh, she discovered coding at age 12 and never looked back, though she balanced her tech career with a passion for mountain sports. Sarah's work on screen reader compatibility and voice control systems transformed digital access for millions. Colleagues admired her technical brilliance and her insistence that 'accessibility isn't a feature it's a fundamental requirement.' Outside work, she was an accomplished alpinist who summited the Matterhorn and Eiger, often organizing climbing trips for women in tech. She is survived by her parents in Scotland, her brother, and her partner Chloe. In her memory, her company has established the Sarah Campbell Accessibility Fellowship, supporting engineers from underrepresented groups. As she wrote in her engineering blog: 'The best technology disappears, leaving only the human experience it enables.' Her work continues to make technology more human for everyone.
